With good reason: the very special material can be processed in different ways - by the material alloy needed to make the very soft material more resistant. Gold originally has a warm colour. This varies through the addition (alloying) of coloured metals: red gold and rose gold are created through the increased addition of copper, white gold through the addition of palladium. Gold in other colours
To make gold suitable to be used for wedding rings, it is mixed with other metals, such as copper and silver (technical term: alloyed). During the manufacturing process, gold rings can have different hardnesses, depending on the proportion of gold and the process used: today, machine-produced rings are harder than cast rings, even (or rather, especially) when the proportion of gold is higher.
Gold is mechanically very good to work with, it does not corrode (oxidise, rust), it can be alloyed with other metals and does not have too high melting temperatures. Because of these good properties, its shiny colour and its pleasant weight, jewellery, coins and religious symbols have long been made of gold. Gold mining started thousands of years ago. In South-Eastern Europe, gold was already used around 4,000 B.C., in Central Europe since around 2,000 B.C., in South America since the first millennium. Gold is found all over the world, mainly in rocks. Today, gold is mostly mined in South Africa, Australia, Russia and the United States, but also in other countries.
