This mixture of materials is called an alloy. The base metals are mainly platinum (PT), gold (AU), palladium (PD), silver (AG) and copper (CU). The fineness shows how many parts of the highest quality precious metal are contained in your piece of jewellery. It is indicated in thousandths. For example, gold 585/- contains 585 parts of pure gold for every 1000 alloy parts.
